VC AE-FUNAI COMMISSIONS CORPERS GREEN GARDEN
Vice-Chancellor, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, recently commissioned AE-FUNAI Corpers Green Garden. The event took place at the garden site between Holy Family Catholic Chaplaincy site and Security House, Zone A.
The Green Garden, which covers over a plot of land, is pioneered and managed by a group of eight, among the National Youth Service Corps Members currently serving in the university, under the leadership of Miss Odowuike Ezinwanne Chizomam of Public Relations and Information unit, Vice- Chancellor’s Office, has variety of plants, including fruits, flowers, economic trees such as mangoes, oranges, budded coconut, citrus, step trees, queen of the night, oil palm and others, numbering close to a hundred. There are also concrete built seats, for the relaxation of staff, students and other visitors to the garden.
Speaking in an interview before the commissioning of the garden, Co-coordinator, University Campus Green Initiative, Mr Chukwu Ifeanyi, said that the garden would yield fruits in the nearest future, that will nourish body and soul, and that the garden is a relaxation center for all, adding that the garden will most importantly provide shade to reduce effects of harsh weather. Chukwu thanked University management, for giving him the opportunity to work with Corps members in the Campus Go-Green Initiative to transform the university to Campus in a Garden, pointing out that the garden was possible because the pioneer corps members put in their efforts and time nurturing the garden till the stage of commissioning.
Excited Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, praised the Corpers for the courage and commitment to service and above all achieving the milestone project. According to him,”AE-FUNAI is a growing university and needed trees to serve as wind breaker. No effort is too small to develop AE-FUNAI and push it to greater heights. Nwajiuba asserted that their efforts have been imprinted in AE-FUNAI. While commissioning the garden, he prayed for God’s blessing upon the Corpers and for the garden to yield good fruits at the appointed time.
