FUNAI SCHOLARS SHOWCASE RESEARCH WORKS AT NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION EXPO
Scholars at the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State were among hundreds of researchers that gathered at the Eagles Square for the 2018 Technology and Innovation Expo.
Represented by an 11-man research team led by the Director of Research and Development at the university, Professor Onuegbu O. Ugwu, the FUNAI academics showcased their research works to the public in an event witnessed by the highest echelon of the Nigerian government.
The EXPO which is the 2nd edition of the event was geared towards bringing to the fore the various scientific, technological and innovative achievements of Nigerian intellectuals over the years.
Speaking to the media during the event, the Director of Research and Development at FUNAI, Professor Ugwu noted that FUNAI’s research philosophy was to think globally and act locally, adding that without research and Innovation, Nigeria cannot overcome poverty.
He maintained that the era of carrying out research for mere academic purposes without corresponding economic and production value was over, insisting that value-driven research was the way to go if the country was to compete favourably in the global community.
The Professor of Civil Engineering further urged the Federal Government to take research and Innovation more seriously by investing substantially in it. And thanked the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology for organising the Expo, which in his words was helping to put research and Innovation in the front burner.
In his welcome remarks during the 5-day event, the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, noted that through research and Innovation, the present administration was fighting hunger, poverty, illiteracy and underdevelopment.
He pointed out that Nigeria was driving economic development, creating wealth, stimulating growth and reawakening its national pride in the comity of nations through investment in science, technology and Innovation.
Lamenting years of utter neglect of science and technology by previous governments, the Minister noted that the Buhari administration was committed to improving the lots of the country through technology and Innovation.
Pledging the irrevocable commitment of the present Nigerian government to research, technology and Innovation, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo explained that the government has approved a new National Technology and Innovation Roadmap that commenced from 2016 to 2030 geared towards improving the nation”s global competitiveness.
He further stressed that as part of government’s investment in technology and Innovation, it is setting up technology hubs in the six geopolitical zones of the country, adding that the nation was becoming a knowledge-based economy.
The FUNAI Research Team to the expo includes Dr. Moses Alo, Dr. Onyebuchi China, Dr. Azubuike Ebokaiwe, Dr. Nnenna Nwosu-Nworuh, Dr. Chukwunonso C. C Ejike, Mr. Ukwa Job, Engr Dr. Michael Osigbemeh, Dr. Ihuoma Anyanwu, Dr. Makuachukwu Ojide and the Director, Centre for Development Assistance Management, Partnership and Training, Mr. Chris Uwadoka.
During the event, the research team was visited by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba and the Senator representing Ebonyi South District in the National Assembly, Chief Sonny Ogbuoji.
