FG APPOINTS NEW GOVERNING COUNCILS FOR 12 UNIVERSITIES
The Federal Government of Nigeria under the Leadership of President Mohammadu Buhari has approved the constitution of a new Governing Councils for Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo and other eleven Universities established during the tenure of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
The Governing Councils were inaugurated on Tuesday, 1st March, 2016 at the National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja. Speaking during the event, the Honorable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu noted that the inauguration marked another milestone in President Buhari administration’s effort to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria’s tertiary education by appointing credible men and women into their councils. He contended that with properly constituted councils and competent management teams, the institutions were on their way to becoming more competitive global players, stressing that the government believes that universities were critical in the effort to achieve national economic prosperity through the provision of relevant skilled human capital and policy research outcomes.
Mallam Adamu further charged the Council members to be bold, courageous and responsive, and enthrone financial probity and moral discipline in the universities while also ensuring an atmosphere of peace and understanding on campus and between the universities and their host communities, in order to ensure the growth and development of the universities. The FUNAI delegation to the inauguration ceremony was by led the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba.
The members of the Governing Council of FUNAI include enlightened minds like; Prof. Mba Uzoukwu, who is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council, Prof. Michael Omolew, Engr. Rabiu Ibrahim, Amb. Scott Emini and Dr. Joy Chukwurehfo.
The new Governing Council is expected to jump-start another wave of infrastructural development and academic re-engineering in the University while also ensuring that the culture of academic excellence and integrity that the University is known for remains its forte as it strives to become a world-class University in every sense of it.
