In its drive to create and sustain an organizational culture that is characterized with excellent research output and quality teaching and learning outcomes, the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi state has inaugurated a Quality Assurance Unit to ensure that the University’s graduates meet global best standard.
The Unit is under the Directorate of Academic Planning and is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that all academic curriculums of the various programmes of the University meets not just NUC benchmarks but also global best practices.
In view of this, the Vice Chancellor of the University has approved the appointment of Dr. Lawrence Ndubisi Ogugua as the pioneer head of the Unit.
Speaking to our correspondent, the newly appointed Head of Quality Assurance Unit, Dr. Ogugua said there is no way any tertiary institution can develop without putting in place mechanisms that will checkmate academic quackery and intellectual racketeering in the institution, remarking that such vices are inimical to the growth and global visibility of any institution.
Ogugua further stated that Quality Assurance is the fulcrum on which everything in a University revolves, noting that it is an intellectually inclined process that seeks to check who comes into the University as students with special emphasis on the student’s intellectual and moral value which will in turn determine the quality of graduates the University will produce.
‘’University is a quality assurance institution because graduates that will contribute to national development are produced from the University
‘’University is also ‘’universal’’ hence what we teach our graduates must also conform to what is obtainable in other institutions
‘’To ensure global standards and best practices, quality assurance must be given pre-eminence
‘’It doesn’t only stop there. From the academic and administrative staff to students, everyone must as a matter of fact be Quality Assurance compliant to ensure the attainment of world-class vision of the University’’, he stated.
With vast experience spanning over 25 years in educational administration and planning, Ogugua said the Federal Government got it absolutely spot on in appointing Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba as the Vice Chancellor of the University, adding that Prof. Nwajiuba is keenly committed to making FUNAI attain global recognition.
Ogugua is a graduate of the Pontifical Urbannia University Rome, where he obtained Bachelors of Arts Degree in Philosophy. He also holds Post Graduate Diploma in Education from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and Masters in Educational Administration and Planning and PhD in the same fields from the University of Jos.
Until his appointment; Ogugua was the Deputy Director, Quality Assurance Directorate at the National Universities Commission, Abuja.
