FUNAI CONVOCATION LECTURE: ONU DECRIES NIGERIANS’ APPETITE FOR FOREIGN GOODS

The Minister of Science and Technology, His Excellency, Dr Ogbonna Onu has canvassed for a drastic shift in the mentality and taste of Nigerians in the area of foreign and imported goods, adding that the country cannot attain economic boom and sufficiency if the ugly tide was not immediately stemmed.

Dr Onu who stated this while delivering a maiden convocation lecture on Pioneering and Pioneers: The search for self sufficiency at the Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State. He maintained that the nation’s economy would continue to suffer if Nigerians do not lessen their appetite for foreign and luxurious goods that have local substitutes.

The Minister further said the country must invest in Science and Technology by inculcating relevant sellable skills and knowledge needed for economic growth and development to the citizens in order to steer clear from economic problems.

He decried ‘’the growing import dependence and rising import bill on industrial inputs in a country that is endowed with vast and largely untapped resources including mineral resources such as petroleum, tin, zinc, Kaolin, gold and silver’’.

Dr. Onu lauded the efforts of the University under the leadership of Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba in establishing a result-oriented Faculty of Agriculture and Research and Development Centre, which in his view were necessary platforms to turn the economy of Ebonyi state in particular and the nation around.

The former governor of Abia State noted that no country can make any progress while relegating science and technology to the background and commended the University for the quality of its research output and graduates.

He further reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government in encouraging tertiary institutions in Nigeria in their drive to self sufficiency.

 ‘’ the current state of science and technology in the country is a big challenge as well as a wakeup call for us to rise and fully embrace science, technology and innovation in biotechnology, chemical technology, food safety and security, ocean technology etc

 ‘’I wish to remind the pioneer granduands that there is no time that your ingenuity and the pioneering spirit is considered more urgently needed than now in contributing your efforts to help unchain the huge dormant potential that nature has graciously endowed us both as individuals and as a country

‘’this will also help serve our collective interest, both for today and also for the future. It is my fervent hope and prayer that majority of you here today will become pioneers that will help transform our nation to become the truly great nation which the world expects us to become given the enormous potential we are endowed with by God’’, he stated. 

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba thanked Dr. Onu and the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology for approving the location of an Advanced Space Technology Application Laboratory (ASTAL) in the University meant to cover the South East Geopolitical zone of the country, adding that he was irrevocably committed to the transformation of the University through production-driven research, practical-oriented teaching and community service.

The event was chaired by a former Minister of Education; Professor Ihechukwu Madubuike who noted that it was high time the nation toed the line of science and technology in order to drive its growth and development more successfully.

Present at the event were the former Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Martin Elechi; former Senator representing Ebonyi North in the National Assembly, Chief Chris Nwankwo, former Commissioner of Education in Ebonyi State, Barr. Ndubisi Chibueze, Arc. Edward Nkwegu, Pastor Eze Nwachukwu Eze and numerous other people.

MAIDEN CONVOCATION: FUNAI GRADUATES 124 SOARING EAGLES

The Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi state recently held its maiden convocation ceremony, turning out 124 graduates in 4 academic disciplines of the University. The breakdown of the graduands showed that Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences graduated 15; Faculty of Humanities 30; Faculty of Management and Social Sciences 39 and Faculty of Science 40 soaring eagles.

These pioneer graduates of the University having been well tutored in the culture of excellence and integrity and equipped with the relevant functional knowledge and sellable skills as well as found to be worthy in both character and learning were admitted into the degrees of the University by the Chancellor, HRM Oba Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland. As soaring eagles the graduates were expected to soar in all facets of life by contributing to the growth and development of our nation and the world at large.

The University having been established on 26th February, 2011 by the Federal Government started academic activities on 5th November, 2012 which culminated with its first convocation ceremony on Tuesday, 20th December, 2016.

Speaking during the convocation ceremony which drew people of all works of life, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba stated that the good performance of the University’s students could be attributed to a number of factors that included excellent and world class staff-student ratio, staff commitment, students’ willingness to learn, absent of common vices plaguing some older universities, good laboratories, workshops, among others, noting that these have all been attested to by the National Universities Commission’s accreditation reports, as well as external examiners’ reports.

The Vice Chancellor further used the opportunity to call for national and international partnerships and investors in order to improve the infrastructural standing of the University.

Addressing the congregation during the ceremony, the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council, Prof. Mba Uzokwu emphasized their resolve, as a University, to stick to excellence and integrity in the discharge of their responsibilities in teaching, research and community service.

He further noted they would continue to build the capacities of staff in order to boost their competences and skills for improved productivity and job performance, adding that the University has a very bright future because of the academic standard they were fostering and the emphasis on the culture of production-driven research and practical-oriented learning experience for students.

The Chancellor of the University, Oba Gbadebo, in his remarks urged the Governing Council, Senate, Management and Staff of the University to keep the flag of excellence, integrity and entrepreneurship flying in order to build and sustain a University that would be globally recognized for the quality of its research and alumni. The royal father further reiterated that economic growth, development and sustainability of the Nation depended on the quality of functional knowledge and sellable skills at the disposal of graduates as well as the quality of research from Universities and charged all stakeholders to ensure that the quality of teaching, learning and research in the University was strictly maintained at all times.

 Rounding off the convocation speeches, the Visitor of the University and President and Commander-in-chief of Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Mohammadu Buhari challenged Nigerian Universities to embark on production-driven research, adding that the Federal Government has set up committee to look into the 12 newly created Federal Universities to determine how funds released for their take-off have been expended. The President who was represented in the occasion by the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed further opined that the investigation panel was to ensure probity and accountability in the use of public funds.

The high point of the ceremony was award of special prizes to some deserving graduates for their excellent academic performances in their respective disciplines.

Meanwhile on Monday, 19th December, 2016, the University held its maiden convocation lecture where the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, His Excellency Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu delivered a lecture titled “ Pioneering and Pioneers: The Search for Self Sufficiency” at the University auditorium. The event was chaired by former Minister of Education; Prof. Ihechukwu Madubike and witnessed by the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi state, Chief Martin Elechi and other dignitaries that included Chief Senator Chris Nwankwo, Arc. Edward Nkwegu, Pastor Eze Nwachukwu Eze, Barr. Ndubisi Onwe Chibueze, among others.

FUNAI GIVES 15 PIONEER GRADUATES AUTOMATIC EMPLOYMENT

As part of its policy of rewarding academic excellence that is matched with unbridled integrity the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State has given automatic employment to 15 of its pioneer graduates that achieved First Class honours degrees in their respective disciplines.

This was made known by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba during the recently held maiden convocation ceremony of the University. The Vice Chancellor stated that the Senate of the University had decided to offer automatic employment opportunities to them as Graduate Assistants in their respective disciplines, noting that it would take effect immediately they complete their National Youth Service.

Prof. Nwajiuba further stated that the offer was to help the young graduates by mentoring them within the University environment to become notable academics in their chosen fields to possess the capacities to play in the globalized economy.

Speaking on this gesture by the University, one of the recipients of the largesse and the overall best graduating student of the class of ‘16, Mr. Mc-Anthony Nnorom averred that it has shown that hard work still pays, and urged other students of the University to be spurred by their achievement and put in extra efforts in their academics and other endeavours.

Having gone through the pioneering experience of the University, the young graduates who have internalized the necessary traits needed to perform at high levels if properly guided would be mentored by more experienced academics as they commence their career trajectory in the institution.

CONVOCATION NOVELTY FOOTBALL MATCH: Management Team Settles For Score Draw with FUWA

The novelty football match between the University Management and the FUNAI Women Association to mark the maiden convocation ceremony of the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State lived up to its pre-match billings as both teams exuded such soccer artistry that could only be found among professional footballers.

The colorful, high tempo and quite entertaining match which took place at the University Sports Arena on Wednesday, 14th December, 2016 was watched by a large crowd of staff and students who shouted, danced and celebrated in support of the two teams.

Led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, the University Management team which was made up of principal officers, Deans and Directors, displayed high level of physical fitness and practical knowledge of football artistry throughout the duration of the match to the admiration of soccer fans that filled the FUNAI sports arena.

The match was made even more colourful and entertaining by the unorthodox football antics and tricks of the FUWA team who was captained by their President, Dr. Chinyere Nwajiuba, and supported by partisan soccer fans of both senior and junior female staff of the University.

At the end of soccer proceedings, the match ended in a 2:2 draw and medals awarded to members of both teams for their eye-catching performances during the match and in the spirit of the maiden convocation ceremony.

CONVOCATION: FUNAI Holds Research Fair/ Exhibition

As part of the activities marking the convocation ceremony of the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State the University held a research/exhibition faire where the academic works and arts of lecturers of the University were presented to the world.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba who upon his appointment told the academic staff of the University that aside from teaching, research and community service, nothing would have warranted the establishment of a University, called for concerted effort in carrying out research that will change society and impact positively on the host community and beyond.

During the event, the researchers and exhibitors unearthed the aetiology of some ailments, causes and remedies of poor agro yields, power generation and distribution, effects of job losses and its security implication on the polity.

In his opening remarks at the event, the Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Nwajiuba who was represented in the event by his Deputy, Professor Sunday Elom, noted that the vision of the University was to become a world-class University, adding that such lofty aspiration cannot be attained without quality research output.

He further reminded exhibitors to always show greater commitment to researches that have practical implication on the lives of members of its host community in particular and the nation in general.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the chairman of the Research Committee, Professor F.X.O Ugodulunwa said the researchers were strictly guided and driven by the motto of the University, Excellence & Integrity.

Professor Ugodulunwa assured participants that with the huge research works going on in the University, ‘’we are poised to meet the aspiration of attaining world-class status in a few years’ time’’

Wide range human research interests like Economy, Medicines, Agriculture, Aviation, Environmental contamination, optic fibre sensor fabrication, aquifer characteristics, gender war, computer-mediated languages, monetary policy performance, entrepreneurial textile culture and masquerade of queerism and Ecology, Arts and Humanities, Mining and Geology were highlighted during the event.

FUNAI INAUGURATES PARENTS FORUM

  • AS VC TASKS STUDENTS ON PERFORMANCE, CHARACTER…

In a manner unprecedented in the history of many public Nigerian Universities, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State on Thursday, 1st December, 2016 met with parents and guardians of students of the University. The event which took place at the University auditorium was the first of its kind in the history of the University, and was geared towards building bridges of friendship and collaboration between the University and one of its very important publics.

Briefing the parents on the rationale for the meeting, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba noted that parents are an integral and important stakeholder of the University, adding that the meeting was an avenue to brief them about the academic performance and behavior of their wards, enlighten them about activities of the University as well as inform them about issues affecting the institution. The Vice Chancellor further averred that the Forum was an opportunity for parents to make their contribution towards the intellectual and moral development of their wards and infrastructural development of the University, stressing that as important stakeholders they should join hands in helping the University to achieve its vision of producing graduates with the necessary capacity and character.

Unveiling the secret of academic success, Prof. Nwajiuba cautioned students against campus side attractions like immorality, phone and fashion frenzies and other forms of youthful exuberance, advising them to rather focus on their academics in order to secure their future. The Vice Chancellor charged them to be serious-minded early in their academic life if they really want to come out with good grades. “If you make good results in year one your possibility of making a First Class honours will be high. If you realize this early you will end well”, he stated.

The parents who were visibly overwhelmed by the simple disposition of the Vice Chancellor, pledged to work with the University Management in taking the institution to greater heights. While calling on Prof. Nwajiuba not to rest on his oars in his passionate drive to make the University great, the parents used the platform to invite others who were not at the meeting to join them in contributing their quota towards developing the University.

The highlight of the meeting was the inauguration of the ‘FUNAI-Parents Forum’, an umbrella body made up of parents and guardians of students of the University. The Forum resolved to be meeting twice in an academic year and enjoined all parents and guardians who have their wards in the University to be part of the association. The following parents were elected to stir the ship of the Forum:

  • Samuel Igwe – Chairman
  • Ekpa Joseph Ekpa – Vice Chairman
  • Peddy Onuh – Treasurer
  • Chief Agwu Oke – Financial Secretary
  • Agbo Eucharia – Welfare Officer
  • A.I. Adeolu – Facilitator

While, an Administrative Officer in the Senate Affairs Unit of the University,        Ms. Eucharia Nwonu will serve as the Secretary of the Forum.
